David and Bathsheba

David and Bathsheba

David and Bathsheba

Where is it written?
Read 2 Samuel 11:1. Where is David’s army? Where is David instead? What does this suggest about the changes happening in David’s attitude?
Read 2 Samuel 11:2-5. What is the situation? What has David done?
Read 2 Samuel 11:6-13. How does David first try to cover up the situation? Why doesn’t his plan work?
Read 2 Samuel 11:14-25. What does David try next to cover up the situation? What additional sins does this add to his earlier ones?
Read 2 Samuel 11:26-27. David may have been successful at covering up the situation to the people around him, but who else saw it?
Read 2 Samuel 12:1-13. How did Nathan use a story to help David stop hiding and understand the situation from a different perspective?

How goes your walk?
How have you seen sin “snowball” (keep getting larger and larger)?
Like Nathan helped David, who are people in your life who can speak truth to you?
How are you guarding your life against sexual sin?

David and Saul

David and Saul

I will not cut corners. God is working in the waiting.

Where is it written?
Read 1 Samuel 16:12-13. What special promise did God make to David?
Read 1 Samuel 18:28-29. Why was Saul trying to kill David?
Read 1 Samuel 24:1-22.
What is the situation? What opportunity presented itself to David? What temptation did David face as a result? What did he do? Why did he do it? What happened as a result?

Note: Saul resumed in his efforts to kill David shortly after this scene. After about 15 years of pursuing David, Saul died in a battle and David finally became king.

How goes your walk?
What promises of God are you waiting on in your life?
What temptations to shortcut do you face as you wait?
How is your character deepening in your time(s) of waiting?
How does this story help you to not “cut corners” as you wait?

David & Johnathon

Impossible challenges, true friendship and the dangers of compromise. This is the story of David.

Where is it written?
Read 1 Samuel 18:1-4, 1 Samuel 19:1-7, 1 Samuel 20:1-42, 2 Samuel 1:26 and 2 Samuel 9:1-17.

  • What do you notice about David and Johnathon’s relationship?
  • What risks did each take for each other?
  • How did they show loyalty to each other?
  • How did they show affection towards each other?

What might David and Johnathon’s relationship teach us about friendship?

Some modern readers have suggested that David and Johnathon were in a same-sex sexual relationship because of their open displays of affection. Others, including Pastor Andrew, would say that such a conclusion is imposing our own hyper-sexualized cultural assumption onto our reading of the Bible, especially as there is no direct biblical evidence of a sexual relationship between David and Johnathon. What do YOU think?

How goes your walk?

  • Do you think friendship is getting harder to find and maintain today than it used to be? Why or why not?
  • What, if anything, keeps you from pursuing deeper friendships?
  • What steps are you taking to form and deepen the friendships in your life?
  • How does knowing Jesus as a friend help to deepen your purely human friendships too?
