Exodus
20:1-3 (NIV)
1
And God spoke all these words: 2
“I
am the Lord
your
God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 3
“You
shall have no other gods before me.
Matthew
7:24-27 (NIV)
24
“Therefore
everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is
like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25
The
rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against
that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the
rock. 26
But
everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into
practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27
The
rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against
that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
Discussion
Questions:
What
do you think are the most common “idols” today? What do each of
them “promise” in return for our allegiance? (Make a list.)
In
the story, what was Emily's idol? What sacrifices did she make out of
her allegiance to it? What did she hope for in return? How did this
mess up her life?
What
would you say are the “main priorities” in your life? What order
would you list them? Which priorities most easily slip “out of
place?”
